Discuss the influence of Rationalism in politics and how it impacts the public’s view
of government services.
Michael Oakeshott is a British Philosopher; he is a known conservative political
theoristThere is an appreciated work done by him on rationalism in Politics, that the necessity of
any practices being done by humans could be transported in a sufficient manner by means of
some guidebook which comprises of obvious mentioned rules which also formalize some
technical procedures with some abstract general principle. Opposite to this theory, he argues that
this is a theory primacy over practice, the rationalist which has made things more backwards. To
understand the theory concept of anything is the prima facia, without that it is not possible to
draw any practical without understanding the theoretical concept. Thus dependency of practical
on theory is absolutely unavoidable is that not just the rationalist is incapable of a skill full
performance, which could be solely guided by the theory part. The rationalist is not just able to
adhere to the defined guidelines while he is poorly performing, rather he would set back
unavoidably on some trend of how to give context to his abstract instructions.
Hence every try needs to follow a certain set of formalized rules in order to follow
a rule in a right way. He contends that the central idea and impact of a successful skill of
practitioner cannot be just conveyed through technical information. (Callahan, 2009)
Explain the six deadly sins in public administration.
One cannot guarantee success of a public service program however the following six
deadly sins can ensure the failure of such program.
Vague Objectives: Objectives for any program should be clearly defined in specific,
measurable terms and should be attainable. Objectives convert into performance. So, vague
objectives convert into ineffective performance. For example, an objective of promoting welfare
of farmers should be replaced by “making pesticides available to 100% of the farms within 4
years”.
Multi-tasking: trying to do several things at once is another recipe for a fool proof
failure. It shows that tasks are not prioritized and efforts are not concentrated and such things
lead to non-results.
Increasing manpower: increasing the number of people in any activity is not beneficial.
