Sex Discrimination [WLOs: 2, 3, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2]

Prior to beginning this discussion, review this week’s resources and Weekly Lecture. Reese Smith is a female employee working in a sales firm. She works in a small department with seven other employees. Including herself, there are only two female employees in the department. Prior to the start of each workday, some of her male employees engage in discussions of sexual nature in the break room. The male co-workers, and on occasion, the female co-worker share stories about their own sexual experiences. Some of the discussions contain sexual jokes. Reese can over hear the discussions. Although her co-workers are not directly talking to her, she is bothered by the daily conversations as it makes her uncomfortable. Based on this scenario, address the following in your initial post:

  • Is Reese being sexually harassed? Provide a rationale for why her situation does or does not meet the elements of sexual harassment.

  • What should Reese do about the situation?

  • How should Reese’s Human Resource Department handle the situation, if at all?

It can also occur if the conduct affects a term or condition of employment, such as promotions, pay, or job assignments. In Reese's case, the discussions of sexual nature in the
eak room by her male co-workers may constitute sexual harassment if they are unwanted and make her uncomfortable. Furthermore, the presence of sexual jokes and stories about personal sexual experiences might create a hostile work environment for Reese....
