Global advancements in technology enable organizations to do business in multiple countries. One aspect of managing people is developing a strategy for employees to work internationally. The process of sending United States citizens on international assignments involves careful preparation and planning by the human resources department. To start, human resources should have an international assignment strategy in place before the organization itself goes global. All procedures should be carefully researched and documented for all countries the organization plans to do business in. By doing so, human resources is ready to push forward without delay. Setting the foundation in advance will help. Human resources will have enough time to address any issues that may occur, modify their approach, and then proceed (Tamkivi, 2019).


The human resources department will need to be proficient applying for visas and work permits for employees transferring abroad (Natter, XXXXXXXXXXThis will include knowing the application process, as well as any restrictions that might be in place by the foreign country. HR is also instrumental in preparing the expatriate and their family to cope with everyday life in the new country (SHRM, XXXXXXXXXXThis includes housing, cultural, and language development (Natter, XXXXXXXXXXInternational assignments also include considerations for relocating the employee's family. Because some families are worried about the lack of programs, they hesitate to accept this type of assignment. Human resources is moving forward and looking at short-term assignments. A failed international assignment can cost upwards of $1 million dollars per year (SHRM, XXXXXXXXXXThis is potentially a very costly number to the organization's bottom line.


In some cases, political unrest in foreign countries can be predicted, other times it cannot. Human resources should to have a plan in place for such events. In the case of political instability or war, human resources must also have a process to protect and remove expatriates by moving them to a safe zone (Youssef-Morgan & Stark, XXXXXXXXXXHaving a plan in place may not fully eliminate issues, but it can assist in solving them if proper steps are in place.

Managing the Modern Workplace


There is something to be said about an HR professional who can adapt with the everchanging landscape of work, overcome the challenges of significant change in how work is carried out, and successfully transition to managing a global technological environment. However, to be competitive in today's HR arena, one must obtain the competencies of HRM in a global technological environment.


Here comes the tricky part. Traditionally, an HR professional is in the same geographical area, if not the same building, in which the people they serve work at. In the traditional setting, HR professionals have the unique opportunity to get to know each one of the candidates and employees of their organization, be able to learn about their goals and aspiration, and guide them along the path to reach those goals and aspirations through face-to-face interactions. In the global technological environment, such actions are much easier said than done. Some things to consider when managing human resources in the global technological environment are how geographical locations, time zones, and cultures can affect the communication, collaboration, motivation, and engagement of employees. So how does an HR professional succeed in this environment?


The answer is building transferrable competencies. "Transferable competencies of modern personnel managers includes the abilities to communicate effectively in the process of human management, confidently use digital technologies, work in multitasking mode, work in a team, ability to manage people and projects, effective self-management, adapt to new/unpredictable conditions and changes in the environment. Therefore, the effectiveness of personnel managers in the remote mode, on the one hand, and the possibility of their trans-professionalism, on the other, depends on the level of development of these competencies" (Kolotet al,2022, p.339). The competencies listed above are not only applicable to the HRM profession, they're applicable to all workers and leaders. Establishing a strong foundation of communication, technology, multitasking, teamwork, management, and adaptability is essential to being successful in today's work environment, physically or remotely.


A way that organizations can keep up with strategy in relation to their employees is to leverage products in-line with the Internet of Things (IoT). "IoT technology is something about application of Internet technology in daily life, which connects to the Internet and helps people use the articleintelligentproducts, enabling them to better meet people's needs" (Wang, Bai & Liu, 2022, para. 8).Put simply, IoT are internet capable electronics, not including computers or laptops, that can collect data and predict outcomes based on the data. Which things in the internet of things will help with organizational strategy for an organization's employees?


-Wearable devices to monitor wellbeing


-Eye-tracking devices to monitor productivity for remote employees


-Cameras that track behavioral patterns for identifying depression in office workers

The aspects of human resources in terms of international mobility can be associated with that globalization. In the era of globalization, the aspect of human resource management is constantly shifting from the previously assigned traditional tasks. This transformation has been continuously addressed in terms of the decision-making system which has become much more complicated in the face of global competition. The need for advanced human resources has been to address the significant shortage in global talent supply compared to its long-term demand (ThiHoa, 2020).
