Purpose of the Paper: Purpose of this paper is to analyze the 3D dissemination of Endoplasmic Reticulum in living cells. The paper demonstrates constant movement in the structure of ER arrangement (of Lytechinus pictus egg) during the complete process of fertilization and mitosis, detected through DiI labeling.
Research question: Whether ER is equivalent to the plasma membrane in its functional as well as morphological complexity?
Pivotal Experiment: ER present in the cytoplasm of Sea Urchin’s eggs were stained by microinjecting fluorescent DiI, dissolved in soybean oil. Confocal Microscopy revealed that the dye spread from soybean oil to the ER membrane but did not stain other organelles of the cell. It enabled to clearly identify the extension of ER structures within the egg.
