In America, the average voter turnout rate is around 55% of the total voters eligible for vote. This rate is substantially lesser than some democratic countries where voter turnout is as much as 70% (DeSilver, 2017). Voter participation has reached as much as three fourth of a state’s population and as less as half the population voting within the 50 states of America. Several reasons can be responsible for this as well as the difference in voter turnout in each state.
One important reason that determines voter turnout is the close competition of contestants. When contestants are closely contested, people feel their votes will make a difference and hence vote. When a contestant is already poised to win, people tend to avoid voting believing that their vote wont matter. At the state level, when the primaries are high profile, turnout is higher.
