1. Analyze in detail the five types of internet fraud. Please describe any personal experiences you have encountered with internet fraud? What are practical preventative measures to deter being a victim of internet fraud? Please be specific.
Answer1-
Internet frauds are any type of fraud schemes which helps the fraudster to reaches people through web-sites, email, chat rooms etc. Five major type of internet frauds are-
· 419 Scam or Nigerian Scam- It is also known as advance fee fraud where the victim receives an unsolicited email containing a business offer or information about million dollar amount/property. The sender might be from Nigeria or from some other part of Africa and wants your help to receive the amount as he cannot get all the money alone i.e. without the victims help. Victim is asked to give some of their details like bank details, address etc. and are also asked to pay small advanced payment to receive the huge amount.
· Work at home packages- Lot many people show their interest in work from home packages as it provide them financial stability without taking any pain of travelling to office. Here, sender attracts victims by offering work from home packages at a discounted rate and after making a payment either people never receive the package or the package they receive doesn’t have any importance.
· Phishing- Spoofed emails in combination to fake websites (they make websites which give a look and feel of some trusted banks, credit card companies, retail outlets etc.) are used by scammers to attract victims to their fake websites and steal their confidential personal data like information about credit card, social security number etc. This information can be used by scammers to steal the money or they sell that information to criminal organizations.
· Lottery Scams- It is also a type of ‘419 scam’ wherein scammers send unsorted mails to people stating that they have won a lottery worth millions and they require some of their details like bank details, personal information, identity proof like a copy of passport, or driving license. Here, either they ask for some advanced payment to receive the full amount or they only need asked information to hack their account and withdraw money.
· Online Identity theft- This is the most deadly threat prevailing as it steals once identity by using their email, user name and password of their accounts, credit card, social security no. etc. ‘Identity theft’ is a movie based on the true incident so it can happen to anyone. Lot many organizations are set up to cater to this problem like GOVECERT.NL looks after Dutch region, AusCERT is a computer emergency response team who looks after Australia etc.
Talking about my personal experience, I receive lots of mail every day about lottery that I won which was sponsored by Coca cola, BMW etc. and I also get mails stating that some person wants my help to receive his money as it can only be transfe
ed to some third party and he/she chooses me. I am well aware of these frauds and scams so I don’t take any action and delete it as soon as I receive it.
Few preventive measures are-
· If doing business through internet than ne should verify the identity of another party.
· Never provide confidential information through email or internet unless and until you are not hundred percent sure.
· Never open any spam messages or any attachment with it.
· One should never install software that they don’t trust.
· Updated anti virus software should be installed.
