Introduction: 
Sickle cell anemia an inherent type of hemolytic anemia occurs due to sickle cell disease in 
which abnormal sickle shape of red blood cells. This disease is most common in African 
Americans and Hispanic Americans. The rate of this disease one in 500 African Americans and 
one out of 36000 Hispanic Americans. Mutation in a single nucleotide (point mutation) of β 
globin gene that encodes beta chain of hemoglobin causes substitution of valine for glutamic acid 
in position 6 of beta globin chain of hemoglobin molecule. This disease expresses only when an 
individual inherit two sickle cell allele (HbS/HbS) from their parent and heterozygote are carrier 
of this disease. Sickle shaped blood cells impede blood flow in the blood vessels and causes 
vascular viscosity, vascular occlusion and red cell adherence to the vessel wall. Vascular 
occlusion decreases the blood supply to the cells and organs and cause hypoxia and acidosis in 
the cells and it also destroy RBCs resulting anemia. 
 Initially several treatment method were used to get rid from this disease, but those were not so 
much effective. Several pharmacological and non- pharmacological therapies are used to treat 
the sickle cell disease. Earlier the treatment was mainly based on several drugs such as: Nitric
