1. I completely disagree with Peter Elbow's assertion that we need a game we love to guide our decisions among competing options. Elbow asserts that the majority of academics and intellectuals are preoccupied with one technique to read new texts and ideas, the sceptical game, at the expense of the other. A game of "self-extraction" from a book's underlying assumptions and conclusions that you force into the open with your stern, scientific scepticism is called "the doubtful game," which enables you to access the text "critically" to look for mistakes and contradictions. In Elbow's words, "the harder it is to doubt something, the more true it sounds."
