Michael Moore‟s satirical documentary film Capitalism: A Love Story is actually
ased on the theme of corporate dominance over the everyday life of the American
populace in specific and the dominance over the world population in general. But
though it may be considered as the central issue in the movie there are several other
aspects that have been encompassed by this documentary film of Moore and among
them the Wall Streets‟ „casino mentality‟, Goldman Sachs‟ influence in Washington, DC,
the te
ible poverty of the low waged workers, the consequences of „runaway greed‟, the
large wave of home foreclosure, etc can be included (“Michael Moore – Capitalism: A
Love Story”, 2009).
The most interesting aspect of this documentary film of Moore‟s is that it is a kind
of justification of the true natures of the elite class, the middle class, and the
impoverished. In one of the scenes it has been shown that one of the hardworking
members of the middle class, as a means of commemoration of his ancestors has kept
such a huge number of arms that are enough to wipe out a particular society in feats of
age and through such scene the director has tried to justify the fact that everything is
not right with the middle class and it is not always the case that the middle class is the
class of the haves not. But to draw a balance in the film the director has opted to
introduce the viewers to the actual nature of capitalism (the system of formulated by the
haves) through a na
ation with a satirical tone which states that, “This is capitalism, a
system of taking and giving, mostly taking” (“Michael Moore – Capitalism: A Love
Story”, 2009). And this is not everything as the director in this movie has tried to reveal
to the American common mass and the citizens of this globe that how the United States
of America is paying the cost of her love affair with her most cherished lover, Capitalism.
The movie can make one understand that how in the system of capitalism one individual
is waiting for a chance to cash on the misfortune of another individual.
The setting of the movie has been expansive moving from Middle America, to the
power centre of the country, Washington, and then towards Manhattan which is
considered as the global financial epicenter. And through this expansive journey the
audience has been introduced with the myriads of dilemmas which the Americans are
facing due to falling in love with capitalism in such a deep manner. The cost of this love
affair is tremendous and to pay for it individuals in the United States are losing their
jobs, their lifetime savings, and even their homes. To emphasize on the myth of the
welfare
ought about by capitalism Moore has deliberately used the technique of
incorporating of irony in the plot. Whenever, there is a question against capitalism, a
capitalist ironically ignoring the real ill-effects of capitalism has commented that
