THE INFORMANT
This film is based on the real tale of Archer Daniels Midland's (ADM) lysine price-fixing case, in which multiple worldwide firms conspired to maintain the price high in order to maximize profits. During the mid-1990s, the lysine price-fixing conspiracy was a coordinated effort to boost the price of the animal feed component lysine (IMDb, 2009). It included Cheil Jedang Ltd. and Sewon America Inc. in Korea, ADM in the United States and Kyowa Hakko Kogyo and Ajinomoto in Japan.
All of these had commercialized high-tech fermentation technology. However, the primary character, Matt Damon's Mark Whitacre, becomes an informant and wears a wire while speaking with other company leaders, revealing the collaboration to the FBI (IMDb, 2009). This film serves as an excellent illustration of collusion.
