Task

This assessment has two parts. You will be critically analysing the application of theories of industrial relations and scholarly research to contemporary practice, using evidence relating to the New South Wales (NSW) train workers’ dispute that occurred early in 2018.To support your work on this task, you are asked to first prepare a powerpoint poster in which you summarise the dispute.

You will need to gather information on this dispute from online sources and on IR theory from scholarly research.

Part A Powerpoint poster

Prepare a powerpoint poster (1 slide) in which you summaise the parties, causes, processes and outcomes of the NSW train workers’ dispute of January 2018.

Part B Discussion in powerpoint

The focal issue for discussion is this.

The HRM approach to the employment relationship is seen to be based on “conservative, pro-management values…” (Bray, Waring, Cooper, Macneil (2018: 17, 55). This position isincompatiblewith a perspective that focuses on fully representing the interests and struggles of employees, including the impacts of management control of work processes.

Using the NSW train workers’ dispute as the field of practice, discuss your ideas and perspective on the issue above. Prepare a powerpoint presentation consisting of no more than three slides plus a slide for the title and for references.

Online submission via Turnitin is required for this assignment. Details will be provided by your subject lecturer.

You must then deliver a maximum 5 minute presentation in class during the two weeks following the deadline. Student who do not present will not get a mark for this assessment.
