Solitary Confinement Versus Prisoner Safety. Imagine Dennis Bradford had survived and been sentenced to prison. Given his crimes against a child, he may have been a target of violence from other offenders. One strategy to keep him safe would be to place him in solitary confinement. Yet we know that solitary confinement is problematic for inmates. Placing someone like Dennis Bradford in the general population may get him seriously injured or killed. Placing him in solitary confinement may produce devastating emotional and psychology outcomes. Danny Madrid did get placed in solitary confinement multiple times. Initially it was for his own protection, since he was young. Does that warrant such harsh treatment? What would you do if you were an administrator? What other choices are there? What is the best way to proceed for individuals such as Danny Madrid and Dennis Bradford?

Solitary confinement is a punitive practise that works against rehabilitation. When the Solitary Confinement used as a punishment, during pre-trial detention, indefinitely or for an extended period of time, for persons with mental disorders or adolescents, it might amount to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment because of the tremendous mental agony or suffering it may inflict. In the same way, Danny Madrid was a victim of such harsh treatment.
