ECON 4510/5510 Unions and Collective Bargaining:
Data Assignment 4
What portion of each industry is unionized? Calculate the rate of unionization for each of the industries.
How does this compare with statistics in the textbook?
Â
ECON 4510/5510 Unions and Collective Bargaining:
Data Assignment 4
To get the portion of workers in each industry who are unionized, first create new union dummy variables for each industry and then calculate the sample average for each new variable. The sample average will be the rate of unionization for the industry.
Â
ECON 4510/5510 Unions and Collective Bargaining:
Data Assignment 4
For example, the union dummy variable is in column B and the agriculture industry dummy variable is in column S, so the new union variable for workers employed in agriculture is calculated as (type—or cut and paste—this command in each row of a new column)
=if(S2=1,B2,false).

Data Assignment 4
If this new variable were in column AA, then the rate of unionization would be the variable’s sample mean. It would be the result from a command such as
=Average(AA1:AA3077).

Data Assignment 4
To get the rate of unionization in the other industries, repeat this process, using the appropriate column letter for each industry. For example, the mining industry dummy variable is in column T.

Data Assignment 4
The Ca
ell and Heavrin XXXXXXXXXXtextbook reports that in 2009 unionization is highest in transportation and the public sector and lowest in agriculture and finance.
The NLSY data co
oborates this: unionization is actually 0 percent in agriculture (and in the military, which is not listed in the text) and is also relatively low in finance. Unionization is high in transportation and the government. It's also high in education, which in our data is not combined with healthcare, and utilities, which is not listed in the textbook.
