Describe the similarities and differences between the ERG Theory and Maslow's Hierarchy.
Maslow's Hierarchy was developed in the mid-1950’s by phycologist Abraham Maslow to explain society’s hierarchy of needs. This model can is described as a satisfaction-progression, in essence, once a need has been met the person will move on to the next most pressing need. ERG Theory was created by Abraham Maslow in the early 1970’s. ERG Theory is an attempt to simplify or condense Maslow’s theory from five levels down to three.
Both theories begin with meeting physical needs; ERG refers to them as existence and Maslow refers to them as psychological. These needs are met with food, shelter, clothing, items that we physically need to survive. Next is Maslow’s safety, this need is left out of ERG due to its unquantifiable nature, when might one feel safe enough to move on to the next need, it’s possible safety may never be met, and so the next step may never be taken. Social need is the agreed upon next step by both theories. Social needs are met with friendship and feelings of belonging. The next step is either one or two steps depending on the author; ERG has psychological or growth, and Maslow’s theory has both esteem and self-actualization. These are met with accolades from work and the feelings that you’ve made a difference in the world and that your actions are meaningful to the world. ERG later added a frustration-regression level; this might cause the person to regress to a previous level and need to satisfy the level in a new way.
How have you used either of the two theories in daily life?
I think everyone has; I believe this is the nature of the theories, to explain why people do the things we do. I think that the ERG theory is more accurate in describing my personal needs progression theory, this is primarily due to the addition of the frustration level. I think this added level help explain why people need to make changes better than the other steps.

Hi Tonisha,
You had stated that the similarities in Maslow’s and ERG theory is simple, they both sought out to find and explain human motivation and the way it affects one’s behavior. Both theories believe that there are basic and important needs that drive the actions of others and motivates them to perform and act in certain ways.
I agree with this discussion that you have stated for this week. I agree with this discussion in which you have stated because; due to the fact that in "Maslow's Theory " this also involves human self-actualization which can also be a cause for people to be able to use this outcome in order to get a much better understanding of problem solving, being able to accept the facts of reality, as well as being moral to one's own self. Having self-esteem, being respectful of others and to one's own self, as well as being friendly and loving to others, and understanding the concept of safety to other's as well as to one's own self; these are all great examples of what is involved as part of the "Maslow's Theory".
