Introduction
Leadership is often referred to as a process by which a leader influences and persuades others by means of communication to achieve the goals and objectives of groups and organizations (Burn, 2011). The leader persuades to change the attitude and behavior of the employees. The essay outlines the leadership theories considering the benefits and deficiencies of each theory. It explains three different leadership styles from the perspectives of use in different situations and their organizational impact. Thereon the essay goes on to identify the leadership style that is best fitted for the new role as ECG’s compliance officer.
Leadership theories: Their benefits and deficiencies
Trait leadership theory:
Trait leadership theory asserts that leaders are born with traits of being a good leader. The important traits that make an individual an efficient leader are intelligence, knowledgeable, assertiveness and charisma which made them leaders. Complex characteristics like self-monitoring and excellent communication style are significant for being a good leader (Bolden et al., 2003).  Many other complex characteristics are also associated with these basic traits of leaders. Disadvantage of this theory is that it is too generic and unclear. 
Behavioral leadership theory:
This theory is exactly in contrast with trait leadership theory.  Behavioral theory states that leaders are made and not born. It is not the traits or personal qualities that make an individual a leader. It is the actions and behaviors of an individual that makes him a leader. (Derue et al., 2011) Behavioral theory also mentions that leadership qualities are not inherited. Every individual has the potential to be a good leader. Leadership skills are developed over the time through processes of observation, training and learning. To continuously remain a good leader in the dynamic business environment, regular upgrading of knowledge and skills is required. A drawback of this theory is that when the job role of a leader is mixed, it may lead to role conflicts. (Derue et al., 2011)
Contingency leadership theory:
Contingency leadership theory is based on the premise that all groups are different in terms of their structure and organization. As a result, the requirements of members of groups differ and style of leadership used should be based on the situation (Bolden et al., 2003).
