The Tragedy of Love Canal 
One of the most heinous man-made disasters was the Love Canal disaster which claimed 
not only lives of many innocents but also blurred the future of many others by spelling a curse on 
the residents of Love Canal. A thorough reading of the case of Love Canal can surely make a 
reader understand that this tragedy was not only the outcome of corporate immorality but also 
the result of the callousness and irresponsibility of the local and federal governments. The 
tragedy of Love Canal should be considered as a shining example of how unethical intentions 
can ruin human lives to a tremendous extent.  
It has always been my personal value to look after my own health for ensuring my 
physical and mental wellness and I do always care about the wellness of others by averting from 
committing anything that can deteriorate the health of any other person. The Love Canal tragedy 
appealed to my rationality and senses as it was an incident through which it was revealed how 
the indifference of large corporations and the governments towards safeguarding the health of 
the populace ultimately caused an unspeakable disaster. The government along with the 
corporations should have averted from allowing human settlements in the concerned area and 
thereby, should have prevented the explosion of such health hazards. The Hooker Chemical and 
Plastics Corporation owned the area and by 1953 the company did bury nearly 22,000 tons of 
waste in the pit making the pit virtually full (Brook, n.d.). Now going through this fact a question 
came into my mind which has been suggested in Nash’s article “Ethics without the Sermon”. The 
question remains that although having knowledge of the potential threats that those dumped 
chemicals could pose to the human population why the corporation decided to sell the land to the 
city of Niagara Falls for only a single dollar? In my opinion the answer is that, the corporation 
was far away from the philosophy of corporate social responsibility and the top-level

management of the company was devoid of ethics or humanitarian endeavors.
