Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) comes under the category of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation. CD is only associated with the bowel inflammation, where it will affect the small and large intestine i.e. ileum and colon. However, case reports suggest that it can spread in any parts of digestive tract i.e. from the mouth to the anus and from entire thickness of the bowel wall. These type of bowel inflammation leads to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and various symptoms such as fever and weight loss.
Current statistics of CD
As per the latest data from Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, around 1.4 million Americans are suffering from Crohn’s disease or related diseases like ulcerative colitis and out of total around 700,000 have CD with chronic symptoms. One data as per yearly study suggest that between the years 1992 and 2004, around 74% doctor’s office visits was increase due to high incidence of Crohn’s disease. However, data of 2004 suggested that CD was the cause of approximately 58,000 hospitalizations.Various clinical reports suggested that CD exist about equally in both men and women, while first time report data suggest case of patients less than 30 years old and in range of 14-24 years. On the other hand, data suggest that between the ages of 50 and 70 years, quite smaller proportion of patients may develop CD, but the disease may vary in different forms. Scientist reported that the exact cause of CD is unknown, while a family history of IBD has been largely linked with increased risk of developing the disease. Data suggested that about 20% of individuals with CD have a blood relative with some form of IBD, mainly a sibling and occasionally a parent or child. Some other factors were found such as cigarette smoking, which might proof to contribute to the development or exacerbation of Crohn's Disease.
