Introduction
In a global role leader has to interact with teams and people belonging to diverse cultural, social
and ethnic background. Thus in order to manage and integrate the individual efforts it is needed
that appropriate leadership style is adopted according to the situation, which is the essence on
contingency theory. Beside of several integration and collaborative advantages of contingency
theory leaders have to face certain problems too. Comprehensive analysis of the problems and
specific advantages are mentioned in later part of paper.
Problems to Leader in Global Role
Under the consideration of Contingency theory, Leadership is being considered as either task
oriented or relationship oriented. Basic difference in both leadership styles is dependent on the
measure of interpersonal relationship between leader and coworkers. (Northouse, 2012)
Whatsoever be the leadership style in contingency theory, the problems of leaders are almost

espective of the virtual of face to face situation. Major problems faced by leaders in
assessing demands can be mentioned as: (Loughran, 2009)
Cultural Differences: As in global virtual team most of the members belong from different parts
of world possessing varied culture, history and backgrounds, thus it becomes problematic for the
leader to understand and co
elate itself with the varied cultural beliefs of people. Individualism
or collectivism is the major cultural dimensions in nation based cultural variability.
Lack of shared Goals: In a global virtual team generally it happens that different team members
come up with new agendas and goals causing difficulties in developing and sharing common
goals or objectives.

Communication related Problems: Global virtual teams faces problem of communication failure
as they lack in visual or auditory cues, which are generally not faced be the face to face teams.
Due to such communication failures leaders fails to understand the physical cues of information.
Lack of Trust: Face to face environments helps in building faster and greater trust between the
individuals and teams, in comparison to distributed situations thus global virtual team’s leaders
faces problem of lacking trust of followers in the leader and team goal.
