Introduction
This report is a summary of the findings of a statistical analysis of salaries for all races of men
and women, and separately for white men and women, Asian men and women in America. The
most useful way to look at differences in salary between men and women is to look at the mean
wages. However, this comparison is of limited usefulness because men and women exhibit very
different characteristics that affect their salary. For example, men tend to choose fields with
higher average pay, and tend to work more hours per week. Because of these differences in order
to determine what effect discrimination has upon the wages of men and women in the workplace
the differences in career choices must be accounted for. A study commissioned by the
Department of Law of United States, concluded that "There are observable differences in the
attributes of men and women that account for most of the wage gap. Statistical analysis that
includes those variables has produced results that collectively account for between 65.1 and 76.4
percent of a raw gender wage gap of 20.4 percent, and thereby leave an adjusted gender wage
gap that is between 4.8 and 7.1 percent." The study wants to explore this fact of gender being a
significant predictor of salary i.e. does salary change with gender.
Procedure
This study examined the salaries of men and women of 25 years and over of age and educational
qualification of college graduate based on the period of 2003 to 2012. The salaries of all men and
women are considered to find any gender differences in salary. Next the race is divided into two
categories. We take white and Asian race to find any gender differences in salary with respect to
age. The data is collected from Labor Force Statistics from the Cu
ent Population Survey.
Results of the Analysis
Table 1 presents descriptive statistics of mean salaries of men and women in the categories of all
aces, white and Asian race. A total of 60 participants (30 men and 30 women) in three race
categories were analyzed in this study. The descriptive statistics table shows that average salary
for all men of all races is $22,338 and average salary for all women of all races is $20,196. The
salary for men of all races range for the 10 respondents is $20,770 to $23,729 with median
$22,574. The salary for women of all races range for the 10 respondents is $17,800 to $22,559
with median $20,635. This shows that men get better pay than women. Also women of all races
have much more variability in salary with respect to their men counterpart. Again, the average
salary of white men is far better at $54,961 and the average salary of white women is at $45,875.
The salary for white men range for the 10 respondents is $53,458 to $56,740 with median
$54,567. The salary for white women range for the 10 respondents is $44,662 to $46,928 with
median $45,974. However, white men have more variability in salary than their women
counterpart. The average salary of Asian men is $3,234.3 and the average salary of Asian women
is $2,773.7. The salary for Asian men range for the 10 respondents is $2,748 to $3,731 with
median $3,289. The salary for Asian women range for the 10 respondents is $2,384 to $3,302
with median $2,838. The Asian men have more variability in salary than their women
counterpart. This concludes that men get...
