Assignment:
Shaping the World We Live In
The internet can be used to do your own research about how the world we live in is shaped by what we sense and what we perceive. Go to the link The Human Senses. Read and complete each experiment- Vision (Rods & Cones, The Blind Spot, and After images), Taste and Smell (Effect of Smell on Taste), Touch (Temperature Perception), and Hearing and Balance (Orienting to Sound & Balance and Vision). In an essay respond to the following questions from the experiments. Include a title page and reference page. Include in the essay, support for your findings and questions responses.
Vision: Rods and Cones- Respond to the questions for each experiment.
· Experiment 1
· Experiment 2
Vision: The Blind Spot- Respond to the questions for each experiment
· Experiment 1
· Experiment 2
Vision: Afterimages- Respond to questions

Taste & Smell – Respond to the questions
· Taste
· Smell
Touch- Respond to the questions
· Temperature Perception
Hearing and Balance- Respond to the questions
· Orienting to sound
· Balance and vision

Vision: Rods and Cones
Experiment 1 –Yes, I could make it out more clearly. This relates to rods and cones because both of them are receptors of a thin layer of neural tissue called retina at the back side of an eyeball for vision. The cones work finest in the
ight light contrary to rods which are extra sensitive to light but work finest in hazy light. Cones are sensitive to colour whereas rods are not colour sensitive which makes them essential to night vision. The reason why I could make out the object clearly in the dark by using the peripheral vision of mine is because rods are more focussed all around the periphery of the retina but the cones are more compactly focussed at the centre of the retina.
Experiment 2 – I can see but not easily recognise the colours in dim light is because of the rods which is the receptor of retina that helps me seeing those objects even in dim light, however colours I am unable to identify the colours because rods are sensitive to colours, though works best in dim light. This does relate to the rods and cones because rods are extremely sensitive but work finest in dim light, nevertheless they can rapidly become soaked with light and therefore stops reacting. Rods cannot sense colours which is why human can seldom view colours in dim light. On the other hand, cones are related to this because it permits us to view colours and can become accustomed rapidly to glaring transformations in light intensity.
Vision: The Blind Spot
Experiment 1- With both my eyes open, I cannot find my find my blind spot because the blind spots are not observed with both eyes open. The reason behind this is the overlapping of the visual fields of both the eyes. Without a doubt, even if with one eye closed, it can be problematic to discover the blind spot instinctively. This is so because of the ability of our
ain to fill in or avoid the lost portion of the picture. Visual information is not directed to the
ain from the portion of our area of vision which is projected onto the papilla. Papilla is a small region within the retina and from where the optic nerve attaches to the eye.
Experiment 2 –When the mouse disappears,...
