Module 1 is designed to allow you to build up situational awareness of the business environment by introducing you to the CEO book & the opening chapters of the text. We start by exploring the roles that businesses play in society, why people study business and economics. We also consider the 'hot topics' in business - what is it that businesses are talking about, how do they adapt, what are the current topics? To get an additional flavor of just what it is that business people are thinking and what they're concerned about, is there any better place to look than to see what they're reading?
For this project you will use 3 months worth of either Fortune, Fast Company OR Inc magazines (i.e., 3 issues of one magazine, no mixing and matching) from 2020.
There are three steps.
1) Create a 3 column table which displays, for any 10 articles, the year/month of publication, title of the article, and the topic of the article in one sentence. Do one table per month. Three tables w/ 10 articles each = 30 articles.
2) Create at least one visual tool (e.g., pie chart) which summarizes how the articles fit into the categories of the dynamic business environment as discussed in this module (if you're not sure what they are, go back and reread the module (not the text). One is required... more is better if it adds to the analysis.
For example, this could be a pie chart or it could be table which merely identifies how many articles fit into the economic and legal environment, technological environment, competitive environment or social environment... to be a rock star, when you do part 1, you could go a step further by breaking down articles into sub-categories (e.g., technology articles about AI, big data, privacy, etc) and you could then give a second-level graphic which shows the breakdown for each category.
3) Conclude with a final slide which identifies any insights or observations on what business people care about.
Some notes:
Yes, quality matters. You should use your best business communication skills to create slides that are communicative, simple, informative, aesthetic... Don't forget your task is to answer the question "what do business people care about" by looking at what they read.
On your choice regarding Fortune, Inc or Fast Company: Please choose according to your interest. If you think you want to work for a Fortune 1000 or Fortune 500 firm, i.e., a big company, choose Fortune. If you think that you'll want to work for a smaller firm, start your own company or work for a firm that is small but growing quickly, pick either Inc or Fast Company.
Please upload your submission to this Canvas website by the deadline.
You will need to use the library databases to have access to back issues of these publications. This will allow you access for free. You need not pay for access from the various publishers to their websites.
