2 Themes - Essay
Select TWO (2) of the themes below and write an essay of approximately 400 words to
espond to the essay prompt provided for it (one essay for each theme you select, or about 800
words total). These word limits are intended as a guideline rather than as a strict upper or
lower limit, so you will not be penalized if you fully address the topic in fewer words or if
your response goes beyond the upper limit.
Due: Thursday, December 09.
These essays will be graded based on the content of your response, not the form of your
esponse. That said, taking some time to create an outline for your response before you start
writing will likely help you create a more organized, clear, and thorough essay. Taking some
time to proofread before submitting your final submission will also help ensure that your
ideas are clear. I will grade each of the two essays separately, and I will use the following
criteria in my grading for each essay:
• Does the author respond to all parts of the essay prompt for the selected theme?
• Does the author provide concrete, specific examples that relate directly to material we have
studied in this course?
• Does the author clearly show how these examples relate to the arguments they are making?
• Do the author’s arguments and examples reflect an accurate understanding of material
covered in the course?

Theme 1: Freedom, Privacy, and Technology
Our course is part of the Freedom, Privacy, and Technology cluster, which examines the
appropriate use of and limitations upon modern technology. In our course, we have looked at
a variety of applications of technology in forensic linguistics, especially the use of
spectrograms for phonetic analysis and corpora for authorship attribution and plagiarism
detection but also more basic tools such as video and audio recordings. Across multiple
eadings for our course, we have seen examples of both effective uses of these technologies
and problematic uses of these technologies. Refe
ing to the readings and other materials from
our course, identify one effective use of technology for linguistic analysis in a legal setting
and one problematic use of technology for linguistic analysis in a legal setting. Compare these
two examples. What characteristics or factors make each of these examples either effective or
problematic in each context? What limitations should members of the legal profession be
aware of with respect to the technology or technologies you have chosen? What safeguards or
guidelines would need to be in place in order to ensure that this technology or technologies
are used appropriately for linguistic analysis in legal settings?
Theme 2: Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice
Our course is part of the University Studies Program, which has as one of its core learning
goals to explore and analyze identity, power relationships, and social justice from multiple
perspectives. Refe
ing to the readings and other materials from our course, provide THREE
(3) examples of how forensic linguistics has demonstrated ways in which power is used
and/or misused in the legal system and how this could affect different social groups in
inequitable ways. Describe each example and then explain how a linguistic perspective
highlights these power relationships and inequitable impacts in ways that might not otherwise
e immediately apparent to someone who is unfamiliar with linguistics.
Theme 3: Ethics, Agency, and Community
Our course is part of the University Studies Program, which has as one of its core learning
goals the examination of values, theories, and practices that inform an individual’s actions,
and the consideration of how personal choices and group decisions impact local and global
communities. Organizations involved in forensic linguistics have developed professional
codes that reflect the values and theories that guide their professional practices as well as the
potential impacts that their work may have on local and global communities. Choose one of
the codes of practice/ethics below from a professional organization related to forensic
linguistics. Examine the guidelines provided in the code you chose and identify THREE (3)
examples of specific guidelines that highlight the relationship between professional values,
theories, practices, and/or their potential impacts on communities. For each guideline you
choose, explain how it highlights this relationship and provide an example that illustrates this
elationship. Make sure to indicate which code you choose at the beginning of your response.
