Among the cranial nerves, the vagus nerve is the longest. 
It encompasses sensory and motor fibres and has the greatest proportion in the body due to its passage through the thorax and neck to the abdomen (Fitchett et al., 2021). 
It contains visceral and somatic afferent fibres, as well as special and general visceral efferent fibres. 
The heart, primary blood vessels, lungs, airways, stomach, intestines, and oesophagus are all innervated by it (Farmer et al., 2021).
