The given case explains the situation where whistle blowing is extremely necessary in
order to ensure that quality is maintained in the food products being manufactured. Yet it is also
important that the quality program be improved to ensure that there is no more salmonella
incidents occu
ing without blowing the whistle because that would only lead to the manager
losing his job, as occu
ed in the previous incidents. In my opinion better awareness can help
win the support of the staff and this can then help implement better quality programs in the
organization.
Before implementing whistle blowing and creating a situation where my own job is
jeopardized I would ask a few questions to myself which would include the following:
i) Have I yet won the confidence of the management and would they take any action if
whistle blowing happens?
ii) Is it possible for me to ensure that the labor force is motivate to take actions?
iii) What are the alternatives to whistle blowing?
The first step that should be taken is collect all of the staff and explain to them as to how
harmful salmonella can be to consumers or to people belonging to their own families if they
consume contaminated peanut butter or other products. It can lead to issues with their health and
we as a socially responsible organization should not be indulging in low quality standards.
The next thing to be explained to them is that low quality in products of the firm is
leading to huge losses to the firm as well as causing loss of market share, which would soon

esult in lower wages, no hikes and retrenchment. It is important to explain the strategic impact
to them. Then they would be in a better position to understand that it is not right for them to
ignore quality.
They should be motivated by the organization to perform better and this can be done only
through providing them better incentives. They should be given an extra performance bonus in
all years where there are no cases of salmonella and at the same time a negative assertion is to be
installed where in 10% of their bonus will be deducted if any case of salmonella comes up.
Moreover it is important to provide the quality manager with 1% ESOP so that if the quality
comes down and the share prices collapse, he would also lose a stake. This would make him
interested in looking into the implementation aspects of the quality program as well.
These measures could prove effective in the initial stages. After this an ethical policy
should be put into place. Ethics are to be taught to the staff and they should be trained on
ensuring that each aspect of their professional decisions should be based on ethics. Ethics and
social responsibility are crucial for businesses and beyond profits since this has a long term
impact on the society. Ethics and social responsibility is an essential element of all businesses.
Business ethics refer to the usage of right practices and decisions in business and ignoring
quality, according to my professional ethics and values is not acceptable (Hunger, J. D., &
Wheelen, T. L, 2007).
I would recommend that the management ensure the implementation of classical virtues
in the organization. It is extremely important that ethic be followed. It is very crucial that ethics
is adopted in all avenues relating to quality and that transparency is maintained so that trust and

goodwill can be earned. Business ethics helps ensure that there is no harm or injustice done to
the society. Consumers and shareholders are gravely impacted when quality is ignored.
Quality management helps reduce the rates of e
ors by ensuring prudence in processes.
The history of quality management can be traced to the development of industrialization where
in standardization started to take place. Statistical control methods and methods of inspection and
supervision were used at that time. It is important that in present times, total quality management
methods be implemented and in the given case, it becomes essential to involve the quality
control manager to implement total quality management practices in the organization.
