Introduction
Sanctions are not a new thing in Iran. The very first sanction was in 1979, when the US restricted property and arms transfer from the US to Iran right after the decline of the Shah rule (Cordes, Bosserman, Khazai & Gold, 2012).
Over the years, Iran has faced more sanctions as Western Nations have tried to force it to drop its uranium enrichment program. Cordes, Bosserman, Khazai and Gold (2012, p. 1) assert that the latest rounds of sanctions imposed by the US, the European Union as well as the United Nations since 2010, have been more severe, stronger and far reaching than past sanctions. The sanctions have been applied to Iran’s export, Iranian banks and overall financial system, as well as Iranian companies dealing in oil, petrochemicals and nuclear products. The latest sanction has been EU’s strong embargo imposed Iran’s oil and petrochemical imports, banking system as well as the shipping industry in October 2012.
The extreme nature of the sanctions has had far-reaching impacts, even as foreign reserves in Iran declined due to decreased trading. One of the most vulnerable groups affected have been Iranian students studying in other countries (Elgood & Hepistall, 2012).
The sanction on Iran’s financial system has made it expensive to study a
oad and even made it impossible to access cash from Iran to whatever country they are studying from. This paper evaluates the impact that sanctions imposed on Iran over the recent past has had on Iranian International students. The economic sanctions against Iran have had negative devastating effects on Iran international students.

Economic sanction is a foreign policy instrument used on a country as a form of penalty for a number of reasons or as a tool to put economic pressure on the country to conform to certain standards desired by the imposing country or countries (Berman, 2011).
The sanctions imposed on Iran have had impacts on various aspects of the Iranian economy. Iranian students studying a
oad have been among the worst hit group. A recent study conducted by the Council of International Students in Australia (CISA) found that Iranian students in Australia were finding it hard to pay their tuition as the exchange rates have more than trebled with the Iranian rial undergoing massive devaluation.
Ninety percent of the respondents from the survey noted that they were having trouble getting money transfers from Iran, while 88% noted that they were not able to concentrate on their studies as fears of having to drop out constantly plagued them (Richards, 2012, p. 7).
Such findings are reflective of other students around the world.
