CANCER: CASE STUDY 2
Pathophysiology, diagnosis, aetiology, and common treatment options for cance
Introduction
The word cancer and tumor are mostly used interchangeably. However, a tumor is not necessarily cancer. There are many types of cancers and tumors existing. The essence of this paper is to discuss the pathophysiology of colorectal cancer.
The pathophysiology of cancer tumors
Cancer ha
ors a pathophysiology that is complex in nature. The pathology of cancer alongside other complex disorders has undergone tremendous changes with the development of technologies such as flow cytometry, moleculuar biology, and immunohistochemistry (World Health Organization, 2014).
Genes
For normal cells, genes are responsible for regulating the development, maturity and death of cells. Changes in genetics can happen at different levels. There could be a loss or gain of a whole chromosome and which can influence a single DNA nucleotide. Furthermore, a single point mutation can as well affect the DNA nucleotide (Hanahan, and Weinberg, 2011). The main categories of genes which are affected by such changes include Oncogenes and Tumor suppressor genes. Oncogenes are a type of genes that causes cancer. These could be normal genes that are expressed at incongruously high levels among patients with cancer. They can also be changed or altered normal genes because of mutations (Ljubojevic, Skerlev, 2014). On the other hand, tumor suppressor genes are a kind of genes that impair cell division and multiplication of cells which normally prevent the sustenance of cells that damage DNA. For patients suffering from cancer, tumor suppressor genes are mostly disabled. This is as a result of changes caused by cancer-promoting genes. In typical sense, gene alteration is necessary if a normal cell is to be transformed into a cancer cell (Mantovani, 2010).
Tumors
A tumor is a Latin word which implies a type of swelling. However, some of the swellings may be caused by other factors such as cysts, inflammation, or lesions (Webmed, 2018). A cancerous tumor is capable of growing, metastasizing and spreading quickly to other body tissues. While some of the...
