how do different lid coverings affect earthworms? for example my biology assingment has been set up with plastic containers containg the eaual amounts of soil and worms. I am testing to see if different levels affect growth and population rates. the coverings are Carpet, lip, uncovered and mesh. Once the ideal covering is discovered i am testing if diffferent food products will also have affects on growth. Can you please give me infomation to help. thankyou

Few important concepts we need to remember here are; presence of microbes in air and 
requirement of nutrition and oxygen by an aerobic organism.  
For instance; hope you remember the experiment performed by „Francesco Redi‟ in 
which, he used different lids over jars to check out the “spontaneous generation theory”. The 
rationale behind application of these lids was to allow/restrict the entry of viable organisms 
through air with the help of different coverings.
In the same way, earth worm‟s growth might get affected if microbes could enter into the 
container with air.
