Creating A Nudge Report:
Based on book Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein
Goal: To create your own “Nudge Report” in response to the changing economic reality of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Knowledge to master:
· Understand the concept of a “nudge” and how it can apply in different economic scenarios
· Understand the basic behavioural influences and heuristics that influence the process of nudging
· Understand the role of “choice architecture”
· Identify a societal choice relating to the COVID-19 pandemic that can be influenced by a better design in choice architecture
· Design your own nudge that can apply to improve the above choice
Path to knowledge:
· Read at least the following sections in Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein:
· Part 1: Humans and Econs
· Part 3: Health
· Part 4: Freedom
· Read the news on a regular basis seeking to identify behaviours and habits that have become a focal point of policy makers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic
Task: Create a Nudge Report using the below outline for sections:
· 1 - An Introduction to Nudging
· 1.1 - What is a nudge?
· 1.2 - What are common heuristics that form the foundation for nudging?
· 1.3 - What is the role of a choice architect?
· 2 - Nudging Examples
· 2.1 - Describe in detail one challenge in choice architecture outlined in part 3 of the book, what nudge(s) was applied and what outcome was achieved using the nudge
· 2.2 - Describe in detail a second challenge in choice architecture outlined in part 4 of the book, what nudge(s) was applied and what outcome was achieved using the nudge
· 3 - Today’s Challenge
· 1.1 - Identify a challenge in choice architecture created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the policy response (this can be in any location or jurisdiction)
· 1.2 - Provide detail and background to the challenge you are presenting
· 1.3 - What heuristic(s) or behavioural influence(s)is impacting this choice?
· 1.4 - Explain what method(s) have been used in presenting the choice until this point
· 4 - Your Nudge Design
· 1.1 - As a choice architect for the challenge raised in Section 3, what nudge would you design to aid in the decision making process?
· 1.2 - What evidence (ie other examples when this or a similar nudge was used) can you present that supports the potential effectiveness of your nudge?
Acceptable Forms for Nudge Report
· Written: A detailed and annotated pape
· Oral: A detailed video or video series with an accompanying bibliography
· Visual: A detailed and annotated slide show

ic
Expectation
5 marks = exceeds expectation
0 marks = fails to meet expectation
Knowledge
Report reflects a thorough knowledge of the ideas referenced in the book
Report reflects a thorough knowledge of the ideas referenced in accompanying research
Application
Report details a cu
ent challenge that appropriately applies to a nudge framework (ie is addressing a known heuristic or behavioural influence)
Report offers a suggested nudge that clearly addresses the challenge
Thinking
Report shows that the cu
ent challenge is evaluated critically (ie - you can explain the challenge and why the cu
ent choice architecture is faulty)
Report offers a creative nudge design (ie - your suggested nudge shows
oad and creative thinking)
Communication
Report is presented clearly and understandably without e
ors in presentation (ie - spelling, grammar, well-spoken sentences, effective use of tables or charts)
Report contains a minimum of 3 citations and 1 one direct quote per section
