ASSIGNMENT 1: FOCUS ON THE LEARNER
Profile of the Learner:
Abdul Rehman is originally from Somalia. His mother tongue is Arabic, and he also speaks a local Somalian dialect. He lived in Somalia for the first eighteen years of his life. In addition, he has lived in Uganda for two years where he was first introduced to the English language. Prior to that, he did not get an opportunity to attend regular school. He cu
ently lives with his mother and father in Belfast.
Reasons for Learning English:
According to Jeremy Harmer, “many people learn English because they have moved into a target-language community and they need to be able to operate successfully within that community”[footnoteRef:2]. For Abdul Rehman, the most immediate motivation for learning English is to be able to communicate effectively with the medical staff at the hospital where his parents visit regularly. Moreover, after going through a difficult time in Somalia, he seeks to create a better life for himself and his parents in Belfast. He wishes to acquire a certain degree of fluency in written and spoken English and a better understanding of grammar in order to help him with a job later in life. The initial goal is to focus on speaking/listening as it relates to his more recognizable need of communicating with people for accessing health services and other amenities. [2:      J. Harmer, How to Teach English: An Introduction to the Practice of English Language Teaching 2nd Edition, Pearson Longman, Harlow, 2007, p. 11.]
Learning Style:
Abdul Rehman attends English classes in another college three days a week, where he studies Basic English. From his interview, I have assessed that he is a bit introverted. During class he rarely engages in any discussion and only participates when asked to do so. When provided with the opportunity to speak with me in private, he was confident in answering my questions. The reason for such behaviour could be attributed to the lack of educational experience in his country where, according to Abdul Rehman, education was not easy to achieve. Despite being reluctant to speak in class, he enjoys taking part in games and other activities...
