ECON309 Research Assignment
Industry regulators such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
outinely monitor a variety of industries to assess competition and market efficiency in the
interest of consumers. A recent market study by the ACCC relates to Australian electricity

Each student is required to complete a research report of 1,000 words (including references)
on the following:
Discuss the reasons for Australia’s high electricity prices. Discuss previous electricity policy
approaches and possible future policy approaches. From an economic perspective, what are
the implications of high electricity prices and policy responses in terms of efficiency and
equity?
