In the bestselling bookHow We Decide, author Jonah Lehrer talks extensively about how decisions are made in a split second and how the brain is wired to respond quickly to situations requiring an instant, almost unconscious reaction. Examples include sports and the split-second decision to throw the game-winning touchdown pass, a pilot that successfully lands a plane with seconds to spare, etc.
Ruth Chang, in her TED Talk (2014), is much more thoughtful in explaining the process we go through when considering the pros and cons of important decisions. Begin by watching theTED Talk by Ruth Chang(Links to an external site.)and consider the information presented along with the Ethics in the Workplace (Johnson 2007) resource you read last week.
Why is it that it is often so difficult to make a decision or choice? Share an example of making a difficult decision and what your considerations were prior to deciding. In hindsight, would you have done anything differently? Was there a “winner” and a “loser” in your choice? Were the consequences significant? What might have happened if you made a different decision?
Your initial post (due on Day 3) should beat least 350 words and should reference at least two different academic sources.
