In my opinion and from some research I’ve done I believe the US is slowly becoming a checkless society. Checks can be a security issue because of how easily they can be stolen. The high rates of theft have led the Social Security Administration and payroll services switch from issuing checks to direct deposits. Payroll checks and government checks can be replaced but personal checks can vary. When paying by check anyone who has access to the piece of paper can have access to checking account number and routing number. It’s also a hassle to have people pay by check. The receiving party has to hope that the checking account has sufficient funds to cover payment by the time the check reaches the bank. Payment by credit card, debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, or any other online transaction doesn’t require any trust at all. In fact the receiving party receives confirmation from the card holder’s bank within seconds. With checks that level of security is not achieved. Paying bills online has become very popular within the years. This method of pay is much faster and secure. The only issue with these payments is that they require a handheld device or web browsers. Not everyone has access to computers to pay online but the number of people without modern electronic payment methods is dropping each year. Eventually checks and checkbooks shall be a thing in the past in the US. Less and less people use them and I’m sure sooner or later they will no longer be used.

A checkless society is defined as a society in which operates fully online or electronically. For example, all transactions are no longer performed in a banking institution and instead will be performed online. Writing checks, transferring money and all transactions will occur online. Money orders, cash, checks, etc will no longer exist. Many examples of this transformation have been demonstrated for quite some time and are certainly the direction in which our society is transforming to, however in my opinion is such that this will take time and not happen over night. I do believe as our society continues to grow, it is proven that each day there are more areas in which become more technologically advanced and less hard copy or cash. In the same manner, I believe this idea of a checkless society and the areas in which continue to advance are occurring rapidly but will take time to perfect and continue to advance. As Barnes stated in his summary of a checkless society, this will eventually occur that individuals will no longer need to carry a wallet full of credit cards or money. "We are told that eventually...are transacting business with" (Barnes). Being that the idea of a checkless society is evolving rapidly there are several aspects which the members of the society should watch carefully. With that said, laws regarding exchanges of money and goods will need to be more reinforced and reviewed. For example, the issues that arise currently including stolen credit cards and identities will only increase as a checkless society evolves which is why lawyers must closely evaluate and prepare for such events.
