With the advancement of technology, telecommunication and communication; the era
of Internet came into existence. The increasing use of Internet, telephones, mobiles, has
fostered great impact on life of every individual as well as organization’s success and
survival. In context of these changing workplace attributes, majority of employers across the
globe are using more and more employee’s monitoring device for tracking their employees’
activities. Employee monitoring is defined as an act of monitoring and watching the
employee’s action during the working hours through the use of employer’s property and
property (Raposa and Mujtaba, 2003). Companies monitor the acts of their employees,
through their email and phone records; reading corporate e-mails; tapping phones or
conducting video surveillance themselves; monitoring office phone records, footages
ecorded, and others. Employee monitoring is regarded as the acceptable act as while joining
the organization, employers or management takes authority to look into this information
when the question related to company’s benefit or potential risk is there.
Moreover, it is argue that employee’s monitoring is required as well as beneficial for
the company as it helps 1) to measure the productivity, like: assessing employees-customer
contacts over mails or telephones; 2) checking that the communication system is not used for
personal purposes inappropriately; 3) maintaining the confidentiality so that no employees
can leak the secrets of the company to the outsiders; 4) limiting or restricting company’s
liability for the employee’s misconduct; 5) ensuring desire code of conduct from the
employees.
Despite of the good intention or objectives of employees’ monitoring, it falls into
continuous controversies as employees regard their monitoring as distracting, stressful and
