Assessment topic

This assignment is a comparison of a journal paper from Western Australia(WA) that examines related aspects of broad-acre cropping systems to that of another part of Australia. There is a list of potential papers at the end of this assignment sheet. Please choose one paper. You will need to find another paper from a scientific journal (not a conference paper) that covers the same topic but in a different location. There must be no authors in common between the two papers.

Students must submit the citation of the proposed second paper to the lecturer for approvalby week 3.

You are expected to produce a report which concisely summarises each of the two papers in your ownwords, critiques them, compares and contrasts the approach taken and/or the information from them anddiscusses the relevance and/or importance to agriculture in WA.

Use the headings in the marking rubric to ensure you complete the required components

Do not produce a re-hashing ofthe papers. You do not need to present the results of the paper again. Simply summarise the purpose of the study, the main findings and conclusions in your own words (in a few paragraphs).The main parts of the assignment are the 'discussion of the scientific content and any deficiencies or ambiguities in the papers'.Please ensure that you are familiar with what is meant by a synthesis &critique. This involves writing aboutwhat was good and bad about the work and the paper, how it relates to current knowledge, how thetwo papers compare and contrast, how useful the papers are and perhaps where they could go fromhere with future work.

The use of additional references is an important part of this report. You must reference any statementsthat relates to why a part of a paper or the experiment is good or bad, or does or does not relate to WAagriculture. Additional references will also be important when relating the papers that you arereviewing to previous work done in the area. You should give your own thoughts and opinions (and can even write inthe first person if you wish), but you MUST have support or justification for the points that you makeor opinions that you have.

"I think the paper is well written" is not sufficient. Why it is well written? What is good/bad?How itrelates to other papers or to the generally accepted structure of a paper, is far more informative.

"The information in the paper is useful" is not sufficient; relate it to other work and/orparticular cropping systems (with references and/or supporting information) so your reader can seewhy it is useful.

Remember to list the two papers that you have selected.

The two articles selected in this analysis are:

anean Clover, by You et al (2017).
Summary of Information
The study conducted by O’Rourke et al (2012) elaborates the effectiveness of mineral nutrients in improving the root disease in subte
anean clover which is a main pasture legume growing in many parts of Western Australia. During 1960, the country faced a reduction of subte
anean clover pastures, the weeds started increasing and the main crop produce started reducing in quantity. The main factors responsible for this problem were poor nutrition and the root disease. Experiments of the fields were done to assess the pathogenic and nutritional status of clover and the soil from three parts of WA. The intensity of lateral and tap root disease was determined and the growth of plants was observed when the soil was enriched with complete nutrient solutions with help of controlled field experiments.
The study by You et al (2017), analyzed the role of environmental factors (like moisture, temperature, soil type and nutrients), in modulating the impact of root disease caused by a variety of pathogens like oomycetes, Phytophthora clandestine, Rhizoctonia solani, Aphanomyces trifolii and Pythium I
egulare, in subte
anean clover in Southern Australia. The study explored the effect of the pathogens in causing root disease and the contribution of all other environmental factors. Comprehensive modeling approach was used to assess level of different variables in the soil. The study found that all the factors are positively inte
elated.
Discussion
The research by O’Rourke et al (2012) found that the availability of nutrients reduced the intensity of taproot disease by 45% and the lateral root disease was reduced by 32%. The changes in Potassium and nitrogen levels in the soil depleted the severity of disease by 32% and 33% respectively. The study found that the changes in nutrients level can improve the well being and growth of pasture legumes. The soil sample was collected from three places (Denmark, Mt. Barker and Denbarker). When the soil was amended with its mineral nutrient content like K, N and Hoagland solution, it lowered the severity of disease remarkably. The areas having a greater moisture content in soil, were more prone to diseases. Use of mineral nutrients to improve the soil quality and get rid of all the deficiencies in plants provides an effective way to decrease the root disease severity and upgrade the productivity of pastures.
The study of You et al. (2017) found that all the dependent and explanatory variables are inte
elated. However, there are significant differences in intensity of disease in different areas due to type of soil, moisture, nutrition and temperature variations. Experiments were done in three controlled closed halls with temperature 18/13 C, 22/17 C, and 14/9 C during the day/ night. Two levels of moisture- High and Low were maintained. Two types of soil were used- Sandy and Loamy. The soil was analyzed for the nutrient content and pathogens, plant weight assessments were performed. The experiments were done in 4 replicate pots which were kept in a controlled temperature. The experiments were repeated and data were analyzed using general linear BRT models and ANOVA models.
