Essay 3: Jennifer Pozne
In “Ghetto Bitches, China Dolls, and Cha Cha Divas,” Jennifer Pozner gives specific examples of racist and sexist stereotypes on America’s Next Top Model. Pozner says “dehumanizing” minority women in media “ca
ies very real consequences” for those girls’ and women’s self-esteem as well as for preventing violence against them and social, economic, and political rights (367).
If seeing negative stereotypes on television can have such a negative impact, how much of a positive impact can positive representation have? Choose a character (or a couple characters) from a popular television show, movie, or book that defies identity-based stereotypes. Why is that representation so meaningful?
You need to quote Pozner as well as two to three outside sources. You should quote specific moments and dialogue from your television show, movie, or book. I recommend you also quote academic research on how much representation there is for characters of that identity, on the stereotype, and on how impactful positive representation is for both people of that identity and for people outside of that identity.
(Conversely, you may choose to write a paper about a show/movie that does not reject or challenge stereotypes. For that paper, discuss why that kind of discourse may be harmful.)
