ENST1000 Global Environmental Challenges – Essay – 2018Page 1 of 4Essay on a global environmental challengePrimary learning outcomes assessed2. Think criticallyUse logical and rational processes to interpret and discuss environmental issues;3. Access, evaluate and synthesize informationAccess and evaluate relevant academic literature to construct coherent arguments regarding environmental issuesIntroductionThis essay gives you the opportunity to express your opinion and develop a viewpoint on a global environmental issue. Although you are presenting a viewpoint, your argument needs to be presented logically and clearly, and be backed up with relevant literature.InstructionsTopicsSelect one of the 9 global environmental challenges we are focusing on in this unit. This task asks you to explore a single topic in greater detail and to apply concepts from the lectures to developing a potential response to that challenge, of an organism, ecosystem, process, or industry, by the year 2050.The essay topic is as follows:“[_______] and [________]: Impacts and [adaptation and/or mitigation] options to 2050”Replace the first blank with the environmental challenge (e.g. Climate Change, Deforestation). Replace the second blank with the theme, organism, process, or topic of your choice, AND a locality for which you will explore that topic – e.g. fisheries in Vietnam, forest management in south-western Australia, or transport infrastructure in Perth. Then depending on the focus of your study you will select either "adaptation", "mitigation", or "mitigation and adaptation".The essay should present a strong argument for the projected state of your focal topic by the year 2050, potentially with or without effective mitigation. This focus requires you to be able to interpret response patterns from existing literature and to extrapolate from them to where those patterns (trends, changes in distribution, changes in production, and so forth) suggest that your chosen topic should be in roughly 30 years XXXXXXXXXXENST1000 Global Environmental Challenges – Essay – 2018Page 2 of 4The topic can be as specific or as broad as you wish, but should have a clear focus, a sense of unity, and cohesion over the whole text. The assignment is to be written in essay format including appropriate headings that will guide the flow of the essay (an introduction, relevant subheadings, a conclusion, and a reference list).FormatENST1000: This essay has a limit of 1500 words plus at least 15 credible references.ENST5000: This case study has a limit of 2000 words plus at least 20 credible references.A complete reference list is expected, following the APA6 (Author-Date) referencing style. This task will be assessed on your academic writing, the development of your argument, your use of supportive evidence, and your referencing skills. As this task focuses on a single topic in depth development is expected. The essay should be 12 pt and 1.5x line spacing. Pages should be numbered. A total word count of the essay (minus excluded sections) should be stated.Sections should consist of:(notes adapted from http://www.dentistry.leeds.ac.uk/elective/WRITE%20UP.htm)Title: This should be short and inform your reader of the major ideas that will be discussed.Introduction: Your introduction should be short and concise. The purpose of the introduction is to introduce your reader to the ideas that you will be addressing in the body of your essay. In your introduction you should be trying to bring readers from different backgrounds up to speed with the "topic" or objective of your paper and explain to them why it is that this issue is important. The intro should end with a paragraph outlining the scope of the essay. It is generally written after the body of the essay is completed (so that you know where you've "gone" and thus can effectively communicate to your reader what to expect).Body (using essay specific headings): In this portion of your essay can build a coherent story. Before you write this section, figure out what your perspective is going to be (what views you are showing and support). Having done this, try to present your ideas in such a way that they build logically towards your goal. Frequently using headings (e.g. History of the idea, Specific conflicts etc.) can help you to systematically address each important point that you wish to make, as well as helping your reader to follow your arguments. Once you've developed your headings you can then go back and place topic sentences for each paragraphs of information you wish to convey under the appropriate heading. Each paragraph should have clear, well thought out points, and should contain only the information needed to make or support that point. Fill in each paragraph with more details until you have a coherent argument building towards your final, concluding statement. All information that is not your own opinion should be clearly cited.ENST1000 Global Environmental Challenges – Essay – 2018Page 3 of 4Conclusion: In this section you should restate the objective(s) of your essay and point out how you have satisfied these goals. It should also reiterate what the major conclusions (ideas) of your essay are and what the key take away messages are and offer some insight on what you have discovered.References: These should follow APA6 (Author-Date) referencing style. A total reliance on web sites for information is not appropriate.Deadline and submissionThe essay is due end of day Sunday 21 October: The assignment should be submitted electronically to turnitin through Blackboard.Late submission: Managing your time and meeting deadlines is an important component of your future professional life. Students who submit work late without an agreed extension (granted only under exceptional circumstances) will be penalised at the rate of 5% of the total mark for the first 24 hours they are late and 10% for each day subsequently.AssessmentThe essay (worth 30% of final grade) will be assessed on content, clarity of style, and the quality, quantity and format of references.     Introduction
The forests have been immensely helpful in habitat protection, recreation, protection of water supply, cultural and historic values and for jobs and forest products (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions ,2018). Making sure that our forest could provide all of these things for longer time is known as Sustainable Forest Management. To make something sustainable means it provides us all what is expected today and also will provide in the future. The sustainable management of the forest means we can successfully avail the services of the forest today while also making them preserved to meet the demands of the future generations.
The Forest Management Plans (2014-2023), commenced on 1 January 2014, in South Western Australia aims to protect and conserve the timber reserves and the native forest of the state (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions, 2018). It will be functional until 31 December 2023. It incorporates various management activities to preserve the biological diversity, to protect the water catchments and facilitate recreation. The South Western Forest is considered valuable due to various reasons. They are the source of precious timber which is a raw material for many timber based factories. They have a high demand for tourism and recreational facilities. They have a rich historical and cultural diversity. They provide a major catchment area for the adequate water supply for the whole state. The plans implement the protection of forest values and balance the way they are used.
Therefore the main goals of the Forest Management Plans are to conserve the biodiversity, sustain the productive capacity and vitality of the ecosystem, save the water and soil resources; and recognize and protect the cultural heritage of the Indigenous communities. The Management Plans aims to develop healthy ecosystems, safe recreational access, protecting the aboriginal cultural values, a reliable and consistent wood supply for the necessary products and so on. To become truly sustainable, the forest needs to support our social, economic and environmental needs and values.
Scope
The Management Plan is applied to the geographic areas of Southwest and wa
en regions, Swan areas and Redmond Forest block.
Vision Statement
The government requires maintaining the forests in a way to maximize the biodiversity, timber production, heritage, recreation and availability of freshwater sources sustainable.
Key Initiatives
The plan proposes to add 4000 hectares to National Park near Busselton, to conserve and protect the biodiversity (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions, 2018). It also makes necessary changes in silviculture practices to preserve the threatened species like numbats and black cockatoos.
The Management Plan
The plan covers more than 62% of the proposed land area of the forest which is around 2.5 million hectares of land from Lancelin to Denmark (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions, 2018). 62% of the forests in South Western Areas are parks and reserves while remaining 38% area is used in timber production (CCWA,2013). The harvest of timber in South Western native forests is controlled by the legal procedures and legislative framework. The harvested areas are re-grown with the trees through an infinite number of rotation establishment. However, there are many threats to the forest such as permanent land clearing, diseases of fox and cats, which influence the biodiversity. We need to manage these threats and allow the harvest at a sustainable level to ensure that the forest management in Australia is sustainable.
Through consultation processes, the plans provide numerous opportunities for public engagement. The plan is framed and developed by the Conservations and Parks Commission with the consultation of experts of wildlife biology, water resource management, catchment, cultural heritage and forestry. The compliance of the plan is governed and regulated by the Conservations and Parks Commission and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservations and Attractions (Environmental Protection Authority, 2018).
The Management plan follows a three-scale process: Landscape, the whole of the forest and the Operational. The area of the forest covered under the management plan is divided into two main classes: mixed re-growth forest which is available for the harvesting process and protected land in forest reserves and forest which is not available for the harvesting of timber. There are predefined strict volume limits to ensure that the quantity of timber removed is sustainable by the growth of trees and natural regeneration of trees in the forest. In many areas which are available for timber harvest, many zones are excluded from the plan to ensure the maximum protection of biodiversity. The excluded zones are Fauna Habitat Zone and Informal Reserves.
Informal Reserves
It covers many kinds of the forest such as River and...
