ENGL 102: Researched Argument Paper
Ethics & Social Action in Contemporary Society
The Purpose: The Researched Argument Paper is the major assignment for English 102. It is worth 35% of your grade for the course. Your paper will advocate a position on a contemporary social or ethical issue. This paper will sharpen your research, writing, and argumentation skills.
The Task: This is a researched argument; that means for this assignment you must choose a side on an ongoing debate or propose an alternative position not articulated by the major players in the controversy. Because this is an argumentative essay, you must develop an original thesis that clearly identifies your central claim and the scope of that argument. You should then develop that argument in a 10-page essay that provides backing for your central claim. The first portion of your paper should outline the major positions of the debate before launching into your argument. In the process, cite a minimum of 10 sources that have something to contribute to the discussion.
As you compose the extended argument, take great care to stay focused on the task at hand. First, clearly establish the context of your argument. Bring sources in to support your claims, but remember that you are in control of the argument. Present the sources as backing for your thesis, not as unconnected pieces of information. And take care to address any opposition to your argument by quoting or summarizing opposing viewpoints and then refuting them with valid counterevidence.
Format: Minimum of 10 full pages. Use MLA conventions for works cited. A minimum of 10 scholarly sources must be used.
