1. Determine the ethical implications of businesses polluting in a third world country. Explain your rationale
It is unethical for a business unit to pollute the environment of a third world country. In fact, it is highly unethical & in humanitarian for any business unit to pollute the environment of any country in the world. Let’s take the reference of Cubatao, which is also known as “Valley of Death” in Brazil. The air of the city is toxic enough to make a person suffer from respiratory disorders. 10% of factory workers are vulnerable to leukemia because of a low count of white-blood-cell. Infant mortality rate is 10 % higher in Cubatao as compared to other areas in the same region. 1/3rd of the total residents of Cubatao suffer from respiratory disease. The ultimate reason behind all of these miseries is Industrial Pollution in Cubatao. I don’t opine that industrial growth should be put to a halt because it is leading to pollution but I firmly think that advance pollution control measures & techniques should be used to minimize the pollution coming out of these industries. For ex: Chimneys should be equipped with advance smoke filtration processes. In 1991, World Watch magazine reported that Western companies dumped more than 24 million tons (22 million metric tons) of hazardous waste in Africa alone during 1988. Is it at all ethical to dump ones’ own hazardous waste into someone else’s land? Will it not be ethical for these organizations to invest some amount out of their hefty profits into R&D so as to innovate processes to dispose or recycle the same waste? Union Ca
ine, the US based Chemical Manufacturer can be considered as one more such example that moved its chemical manufacturing plant to Bhopal in India, to manufacture a product that was not allowed to be manufactured in US and we all are aware about the tragedy that happened next. We recall it by the name of “Bhopal Gas Tragedy” that took hundreds of innocent lives. In my opinion either we pollute The United States of America or we pollute some Third World Country located in South America, South Africa or South Asia, but ultimately we are polluting our very own planet and in one way or the other we will have to face the consequences in the form of droughts, famines, floods, acidic rains etc. So, countries from 1st world, 2nd world & 3rd world must come together & join hands to minimize pollution be it soil pollution, water pollution, air pollution or any other form of pollution so that Our World can be made a healthier place to live.
2. Suggest the reasons a business may conduct operations in a third world country and disregard any standards of pollution control
Developed countries keep a vigilant eye on business units to keep them on the track and follow all the rules and regulation including laws that restrict them from polluting the environment. Thus, MNC’s move to third world countries to enjoy the privilege which is restricted in their home country and to make profits without thinking about the environment in which they function.
Following are some reasons why a business conduct operation in a third world country and violate standard of pollution control-
· MNC’s forget the fundamental of Management i.e. Profit is not the only Business of a Business. They enter into the third world country by showing hope of prosperity by eradication of poverty, more employment, high economic development, high standard of living etc. but instead they provide more poison to the environment by exploiting resources and labor.
· The government of third world country also doesn’t pay much attention to the pollution caused to land, soil and air. Their area of concern is more on poverty and to provide basic human needs like food, clothing, and shelter to their citizen and that’s why they choose neglecting or compromising on the standards of pollution control by imposing considerable fees for accepting their ga
age.
· Reckless handling of Industrial waste in third world country also plays a vital role in attracting more MNC’s because in developed countries there are heavy penalties levied on...
