Pick one of the following disabilities to research and create a 2-page flyer. Include

at least 4 resources/references where families can get information. Resources can

include: books, websites, information brochures and journals. Resources should be

listed in APA style as the last section. Word 2010 has a feature that will complete

your bibliography for you in APA style.

These flyers will be shared with classmates as a resource. Please save your flyer in a

PREVALENCE: 
A type of mental retardation caused by extra genetic 
material in chromosome 21, the estimated incidence of 
Down Syndrome has been found to be between 1 in 1,000 to 
1 in 1,100 live births globally (World Health Organization, 
2017). It must be noted that, “Each year approximately 3,000 
to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome disorder 
and it is believed there are about 250,000 families in the 
United States of America who are affected by Down 
Syndrome” (World Health Organization, 2017).  
TYPICAL AGE OF DIAGNOSIS: 
It has been found that Down Syndrome is usually identified 
at the time of birth and in some cases it has been detected 
shortly after birth (). Physical characteristics are the basic 
source of diagnosis among babies born with down 
syndrome (NADS, 2016).  
 
DETERMINING FACTORS FOR 
DIAGNOSIS: 
Down Syndrome can be diagnosed by screening tests, 
which may include ultrasound and blood test during first or 
second trimester (WebMD, 2017).  
Then there are diagnostic tests for determining factors for 
developing Down Syndrome, and such tests include 
chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis (WebMD, 2017).
