CASE: The Harvard Graduate Student Housing Survey

Questions:

1-Go through the survey questionnaire in Exhibit 1 as a respondent. Reflect on your experience: What are your feelings, thoughts (e.g., what images come to your mind?) and emotions as you go along? What makes you want to stop, what drives you to continue? What is easy to answer, what is difficult? What are the merits of this questionnaire? What are apparent shortcomings?

2-Reflect on your own experience with housing as a graduate student. Is there an important aspect of your experience that was not captured by the 2001 survey? Write a question (or a block of questions) that should be added to the survey to capture that aspect in manner that might impact decision making. Please specify the format of the answer to your question (e.g, an open-ended question or a five-point scale). Try to achieve professionalism in your wordings.

3-Much conscientious efforts were invested in the 2001 graduate housing survey. About $50,000 was spent on this piece of research. Do you believe the survey effort was worth $50,000? Why or why not.

4-What are the limits of survey research? If not a survey, what else would you recommend to understand the customer in a way that would inform long range planning in Allston (you might start by focusing on the three issues on p.10 of the case, and then think more broadly).

The Harvard Graduate Student Housing Survey
Go through the survey questionnaire in Exhibit 1 as a respondent. Reflect on your
experience: What are your feelings, thoughts (e.g., what images come to your mind?)
and emotions as you go along? What makes you want to stop, what drives you to
continue? What is easy to answer, what is difficult? What are the merits of this
questionnaire? What are apparent shortcomings?
The survey was effectively designed to gather the information about housing experiences of
the students. Overall, I felt that the time I spent on completing the survey was worth it. Some
of the questions in the survey were easy to respond, while some of them took time to think
about the answer. The survey starts with a sentence that the survey would take 20 minutes to
complete; however, it took me more than 30 minutes to complete the survey. The Section A
including questions about cu
ent housing experience, Section D containing questions about
importance of housing features and Section F about housing preferences were most related
and appropriate according to my opinion. The questions in the first section were perfectly
elevant to the purpose of the survey which made me to continue to complete the survey.
However, in some questions, I felt that the survey is asking me too much which made me
stop at several instances.
Most of the questions were convenient to answer but a few questions needed time to think
about the answer. A question in the first section about the monthly rent of the place where I
live excluding insurance and tax required me to calculate the total amount and exclude the tax
amount by applying the tax rate. Furthermore, another question asked the proportion of the
annual increase in the rent of the place where I live in. This question also required me to
calculate the percentage by which the rent has been increased. Moreover, the some of the
questions in section B seemed not much relevant to the purpose. The question about the
timing of entering and leaving the university premises appeared to be i
elevant to housing.
However, the survey was well designed on the whole which allowed me to share my views
and convey my housing requirements to the university.
Reflect on your own experience with housing as a graduate student. Is there an
important aspect of your experience that was not captured by the...
