After reading Radical Reconstruction: A Brief History with Documents, please answer ONE of
the following three questions:
1. What were the fundamental differences between Presidential Reconstruction (the
policies advocated for by President Lincoln and President Johnson) and Radical
Reconstruction? Which set of policies were better for the nation? Be sure to

elated issues of freedom, citizenship, the right to vote, equality
and economic opportunity for all Americans.
2. What were the successes and failures of Radical Reconstruction? Be sure to
address the inte
elated issues of freedom, citizenship, the right to vote, equality
and economic opportunity for all Americans.
3. What forces prevented the federal government from delivering full-freedom and
equality to African Americans during and after the Reconstruction period?
The paper must:
1. Make reference to at least three of the primary documents from the book,
preferably more.
2. Be between three and four pages (approximately 1000 words) in length.
3. Be double-spaced.
4. Be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font.
5. Have 1" margins on the top and bottom and 1.25" margins on the left and right.

History 17A
MWF 10am
8. Use footnotes for purposes of citation (see next page for instructions).
There is NO NEED:
1. For a title page.
2. For a works cited page.
3. To consult any materials other than the Radical Reconstruction: A Brief History with
Documents.
Please do NOT:
1. Use block quotes (a block quote is a quote that is more than two full lines).
2. Over quote (there should be no more than two quotes per paragraph for the
purposes of this assignment and a good rule of thumb would be to average one
quote per paragraph, although not all paragraphs will have a quote).
3. Use quotes in topic sentences.
4. Use free-standing quotes (instead use quotes to support an idea or point and
integrate quotes into the flow of your text rather than merely plopping them into a
paragraph without setting them up).
Footnotes: Using the footnote feature varies from program to program and version of program
to version of program. When using Microsoft Word, you either click “References” or “Insert”
(depending on the version) located on the toolbar, then click either “References” or “Insert
Footnote” and then click “OK.” A small “1” will appear where your cursor is located and you
will be bumped to the bottom of the page (see example below).[1] The number at the end of
the citation is the page in which you took the quote or retrieved the information.
Note: once you fully cite a book then you should use the a
eviated means of citing your
source, known as “Ibid.” For example:
Prince noted that despite substantial differences, “Lincoln worked with congressional
Republicans to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in early 1865.”[2]
Because you are only using the K. Stephen Prince Radical Reconstruction book for this paper,
you would use Ibid. for every citation from footnote two on…. But be sure to put the
appropriate page number after the Ibid. for each citation.
Turnitin, a plagiarism detection software, is used for this assignment. See syllabus for more
information on academic dishonesty.

Introduction
Radical reconstruction is an era in 1867 where the Republicans were the majority groups in Congress and are allowed to ove
ule the decision of President. After 1866, the Republican government proposed certain policies, which granted a greater opportunity to freedmen and sought to punish the south for its crucial role in Civil War (Prince, 2016).
Reconstruction proved to be a mixture of both hopeful and bleak outcome. On the one hand, it allows the African American to experience the freedom and rights that they had never possessed before, but on the other hand, it led to great resentment and even violence among the Southerners. This paper will deal with the major success and failures of Radical Reconstruction.
Thesis Statement
Radical Reconstruction proved to be a mixed bag for the Southerners.
Success of the Radical Reconstruction
Radical reconstruction proved to be a mixed consequence for the Southerners. Although it led to a great resentment and te
or among the Southerners, however, still it abolished the entire slavery system, gave the black Americans equal protection under several laws and granted the suffrage to black man (Prince, 2016). Every war, events, reconstructions have certain positive sides and certain drawbacks.
Therefore, apart from the drawback of radical reconstruction on the Southerners, it has certain advantages. As stated by Ilangovan (2020), firstly, they are the radical reconstruction emancipated the 13th amendments on 1865, which stated the abolishment of the slavery system from the United States. It was passed by the Congress with a hope to protect the slave. This particular amendment law also abolished the practice of the involuntary servitude and peonage.
As stated by Pandya (2020), the involuntary servitude is that section where the employers have full control over their workers and thereby exploit them by through human trafficking. After the emancipation of this law, this policy is being banned. Secondly, introduction of the 14th amendments on 1868 also prove to be a huge success of radical reconstruction as this...
