Functions of Management 
Every organization irrespective of the size and type continuously needs to perform the 
four functions of management. These functions are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. 
These functions are performed in every organization including FedEx, GE, and Starbucks etc. 
Planning is the basic function of management that lays down the basis of how the other 
functions are to be performed. It involves deciding in advance what is to be done and how it is to 
be done. Planning involves setting objectives of the organization, identifying the alternative 
courses of actions to achieve those objectives, selecting the best one and then implementing it 
within a time frame so that the objectives are achieved.  It is an ongoing process and needs to be 
performed continuously after taking into consideration the various internal and external factors. 
It determines the strategy of the organization. Planning lays down the basis for controlling 
(Burrow, Dlabay and Kleindi, 2008). For example: Starbucks is the largest specialty coffee bean 
retailer in the United States and the credit goes to its well-conceived and implemented strategy. 
Starbucks is growing phenomenally. It opens a new coffee outlet somewhere in the world almost 
every day. This has been possible because of its careful site selection, promotional campaigns 
and its commitment to quality. Self-cannibalization is the strategy of Starbucks.
