Analytical Paper #2 
Despite of the defiant and vocal protests of the colonists against Parliamentary law in the 1760s, 
they went for a war very reluctantly in 1775 against the country. The historians like David 
McCullough in 1776, adequately demonstrated the reticence in their texts with which the 
colonists went to war (McCullough, 2005). The odds seemed stacked against the American 
patriot forces and they had every reason to be melancholy and tentative regarding the outcome of 
the war against their former countrymen. The colonists had the greatest military force in the 
whole world with 32,000 personnel and a powerful naval fleet. The colonists were undoubtedly 
the most well equipped and best trained military on earth at that time. However, the optimism 
prevailed in the nerves of the patriot forces and led to success for Americans. 
As an American colonist of the revolutionary era, very few were optimist about the patriot forces 
winning the war mainly because of certain disadvantages the Americans had against the enemies. 
The key advantage was being an underdog as the power of people fighting for self determination 
can never be underestimated. The Americans undoubtedly had the home land advantage which 
would have eventually helped them against the seemingly unassailable resources and fireworks 
of invading armies. The Americans had gained the knowledge of guerilla warfare tactics till then, 
mainly from the battles they had with the Indians for so many years. The knowledge of the 
element of surprise and terrain are the powerful tools that colonists had for bringing up success. 
In the early years of the war, the enemies were not able to translate their superiority of military 
forces into a decisive blow against the patriot forces. Patriot by the definitions proves the 
optimism that they had. Patriots are the persons who support the existing entity and defend, 
support, and love their country. Since, the supplies of the enemies were from afar established

nation or continent, the patriot forces did not have to beat the invading armies, they just had to 
survive against the attacks so that the supplies of the enemies end with time. Reducing the 
supplies of the enemies through standing tall to the attacks and acquiring a defensive position 
was the best approach that the patriot forces could have thought of.
