Overview of Australia Electricity Market
Electricity Networks in Australia:
Australia has two largest electricity networks they are NEM (National Electricity Market) and South West Interconnected system (SWIS). NEM is one of the largest interconnected electricity systems in the world which covers around 40,000 km of transmission cables and lines. It involves supplying of electricity for around 9 million consumers. It is a wholesale market through which trade in Australia electricity takes place between generators and retailers. NEM interconnects six southern and eastern states and te
itories. Around 80% of Australia’s electricity consumption was delivered by the National Electricity Market. Northern and Western te
itory of Australia have their own system of electricity and separate regulatory a
angements. Whole market on NEM operates around a spot market or common pool for wholesale trading physical electricity. This process determines spot price of electricity through physical demand and supply of electricity across NEM.
Australian Electricity market overview:

From above table of Australian electricity market overview we can see that the NEM accounts for 85 percent, SWIS contributes 10 per cent and remote markets accounted for 5 percent of the Australia Electricity market. This indicates that the Australian electricity market was contributed mostly by National Energy Market. So we begin our analysis on electricity traded in NEM.
Government intervention on National Energy Market:
National Energy market was regulated by three bodies such as Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), Australian Energy Regulator (AER), Australian Energy Market operator (AEMO).Both Australian Energy Market Commission and Australian Energy Regulator were created in 2005 whereas Australian Energy Market operator created in 2009.AER regulates energy markets of wholesale and retail and energy networks under national energy legislation and rules, AEMC is an independent statutory body plays a key role in making and amending rules for National Electricity Market. AEMO manages the day to day operation of numbers of market for electricity and gas market.
