Excretion is the process by which living organisms get rid of their metabolic waste products. These if retained in the body are toxic. The organs associated with the process of excretion are called excretory organs. Urinary system of man and other higher vertebrates is associated with removal of nitrogenous waste products and maintenance of osmotic balance. It consists of: A pair of kidneys, a pair of ureters, Urinary bladder and Urethra. Kidneys are located in the abdominal cavity, one on either side of vertebral column just beneath the diaphragm. These are attached to the dorsal abdominal wall by peritoneum, called mesorchium. Left kidney is placed slightly higher than the right one. 
Kidneys are bean shaped structures and each kidney is about 11.2 cm long, 5 to 7.5 cm broad and 2.5 cm thick and is enclosed in tough renal capsule. From each kidney arises a thin, muscular tube called ureter. It is 28 to 30 cm long. It runs downwards and inwards and opens into the urinary bladder by a slit like aperture. Both the ureters bring the urine down into the urinary bladder. Urinary bladder is a single sac-like structure in which urine is stored for some time before it is transported out. Both urinary bladder and ureters are lined by transitional epithelium. Urinary bladder opens to the outside, through a membranous tube called urethra. In male it is about 20 cm long and is divisible into three parts: prostatic, membranous and penile. Prostatic portion is about 2.5 cm long. It runs through prostrate gland. In this portion openings of two spermatic ducts are located. Membranous portion is slightly shorter. Penile portion is about 15cm long. It is covered by the erectile tissue. Through it (penis) sperms and urine are transported outside. In females, urethra is only 2.5 to 4cm long and serves as a passage for urine only (O’Rahilly, Muller, Carpenter, Swenson, 2008).
