Question 1
The CSR initiative selected for the discussion is the Friendship floating hospital ship. This is
a hospital which has been set on a floating vessel and has been aimed to provide healthcare
for free to the isolated communities in areas that are highly vulnerable to flooding in
Bangladesh. The ship boasts the requisite facilities to provide a wide care range along with
various services that extend to screenings of cancer. Operation theatres, state of art laboratory
and issues related to family and women health. Besides, on need basis various services
including surgical camps and other specialists may be provided from neighbouring countries
(Emirates, nd).
This initiative was launched in Dhaka in the year 2008. For the procurement of the vessel,
Emirates spent $ 750,000 initial costs through an NGO named Friendship. Further, the
company also bears the annual operating cost of the ship which is around $ 150,000. The ship
primarily focuses on the various islands situated along the Brahmaputra river stretch
(GulfNews, 2008). The initiative treated its 200,000

patient in the year 2011 and is playing a
crucial role in the healthcare of these isolated people which the government otherwise is not
able to cater (Friednship NGO, nd). This is apparent from the fact that in the year 2014 along,
about 74,000 patients were catered to by this hospital delivering a portfolio of healthcare
services which includes as dispensary as well. The rise of 27% over the patients treated in
2013 clearly indicates the success of the venture and the impact it is having on the people of
Bangladesh. The company on its part advertises this venture to its patients so as to collect
donations which can be then channelized into enhancing the coverage and facilities available
on board (Emirates, 2015).
From the above discussion, it is apparent that indeed the problem is highly efficient and
targeted appropriately because most of these islands are cut from the mainland Bangladesh
and thus lack the basic amenities related to healthcare. Hence, the aid provided to these
people through the initiative is indeed invaluable which is apparent from the quantum of
patients treated from the very beginning and also the growing numbers.
Question 2
As per the Theory of Triple Bottomline, there are three P’s which must be catered to the
CSSR venture started by any given organisation. These three factors are profit, people and
planet (Willard, 2002). Profit implies that the venture should be operated in such a manner
that it does not have any...
