the ortho substituents. Biphenyl is represented by the structure I.

In biphenyls, two co-axial benzene rings are joined by single bond 
(called ‘pivotal bond’). The biphenyl as such shows no optical activity. 
If ortho positions of benzene rings are substituted by certain groups, 
optical activity is observed.
