Introduction
Demographic changes refer to the study of a statistical data related to a population based
on various factors such as age, sex, race, birth rate, death rate, etc. It is used by the government
and corporations to understand the population’s characteristics and changes in population..
Developed and developing both types of countries suffer from demographic changes due to the
apid population growth. The paper evaluates whether the US population is aging. It also reflects
upon the improvements in medical care that are helping people to live longer.
Aging of US society
Presently 40 million people in the US are of the age 65 and above and the figure is
expected to double by 2050 making one-fifth of the total population above the age of 65
(Kinsella & He, 2009). The Census figures reflect that in 2011 the oldest baby boomers in the
US would turn 65 years (Kinsella & He, 2009). Population aging is rapidly becoming a global
phenomenon. The age structure of the company is gradually getting affected by the increasing
number of older people.
The US population has grown significantly since 1950s. The base population of Americans in
1950 was approximately156 million and had increased by 156 million over the past 60 years till
2009 making it a net increase of about 103%.

The population of the US has been ‘young’ in the earlier decades of the twentieth century
ecause of relatively high fertility and declining infant and childhood mortality. The past 60
years have experienced rapid population aging making the population of above 65 years
comprise the highest percentage of the US. This percentage was 12.8% in 2009 and is expected
to become 20.2% in 2050 which will make one in every 5 people aged over 65 years.

In 1950 graph, the median age was 30.2 and the number of births were much higher than
the number of deaths (Shrestha & Heisler, 2011). The important characteristics of the graph are
as below. The significant departure from a pyramidal shape were due to the economic depression
of the 1930’s as during that period the birth rates were comparatively lower. The percentage of
the population above the age of 65 8.1% (Shrestha & Heisler, 2011).
In 2000 pyramid, the census data reflects a the population is experiencing slow growth.
