Life for the blacks in the white dominated society of America had always been a 
struggling one coping with which different black individuals adopted different survival 
strategies. The concerned reading sections tell of such strategies which the blacks were 
forced to adapt to, only to save themselves from harsh oppressions of the white society 
that were rendered upon them, the African Americans.  
The writers of the selected readings had to embrace some unique strategies to 
sustain their lives in the American society. Like many other blacks one of the writers 
adopted the strategy of acquiescence that denotes the practice of tolerating the 
oppressions without protesting vehemently. And in addition to this, one of the writers 
had to remain almost aloof from the society although being in it. Brent Staples, the 
concerned writer, had to live like a ghost, invisible to the eyes of the whites, and thereby, 
keeping the self away from any chances of being oppressed by the whites. Moreover, 
black men like Staples had to always put a mask of the civilized white culture by 
whistling “melodies from Beethoven and Vivaldi and the more popular classical 
composers” (Staples, n.d.),
