In the modern era, the competition among businesses in almost every industry has become so intense that it is not easy for a company to attract desired customers and retain the new ones. Furthermore, businesses are required to emphasise areas such as strategic management which can assist in attaining the desired growth and success. It is also needed by companies to develop a suitable vision, mission and objectives as these elements provide directions. The present study is based on BHP Billiton Ltd which is one of the leading and largest mining companies in the world.
Its vision is to create sustainable values for its stakeholders, and its objective is to maintain its position in the market. Over the past few years, the company has employed several strategies to attain the desired growth and outcomes, and at present, it has implemented cost leadership strategy to maintain its position of being a market leader in the industry.

ying out the SWOT analysis of BHP Billiton Ltd, it has been identified that diversification and strong
and image in the global market are the major strengths of the company. However, increasing cost and competition are the two major threats faced by the selected business enterprise. It has also been analysed that the company has developed a productive organisational culture which focuses on promoting teamwork and collaboration among the employees. The leadership practices are useful because they emphasise on encouraging views and opinions of staff members in the process of strategy formulation and decision-making.

INTRODUCTION
BHP Billiton Ltd was founded in 1885 and it is operating in the petroleum, metal and mining industry of the world. BHP Billiton was formed by the merger of two companies in 2001 and these companies are Australian Broken Hill Proprietary Company limited and Anglo-Dutch Billiton Plc (Donovan and Hartley, 2016). Its product ranges include iron ore, petroleum, coal, nickel, natural gas, silver, diamond, etc. More than 65,000 employees are employed in the selected organisation (Belgarde, et al. 2015).
The present study emphasise on tracing the overall growth and development of the selected business organisation which is BHP Billiton Ltd. Further, different criticism faced by the company and different controversies are also mentioned in the present study.

The mission of BHP Billiton Ltd is to become a sustainable company in the world. In addition to this, attaining high degree of satisfaction among internal and external stakeholders is also a key objective of the company (Shahba, et al. 2017).
BHP Billiton strives to create long-term business goals/ values through developing, discovering and renovation of natural resources. The giant mining firm is committed towards long-term strategies of formulating in low-cost, high-class, export-oriented operations that imitate diversification across the market and environmental regions (Rothaermel, 2015). Comparably data shows that focused core values of company, vision and mission statement are essential in maintaining employee alignment.
Over the past few years, the organisation has employed different strategies which are mentioned below as:
